Get outside

In today’s episode, I talk about the importance of green time and being in nature when you have ADHD.

Hello, hello, hello. This is the ADHD for the win podcast. I’m Chris Ferdinandi. Thanks so much for joining me today. I’m talking about the importance of green time and getting out into nature for people with ADHD. Let’s dig in. So sometimes your brain is frankly just a big fuzzy mess. I am a big fan of working where your current mental state is rather than trying to fight it.

But sometimes the feeling is really unpleasant and you just want it gone. Um, I have absolutely been there. One little hack that gets me moving in the right direction. is to get outside. ADHD brains crave dopamine. We don’t naturally produce enough of it. And it’s where a lot of our symptoms come from. And in fact, a lot of ADHD medications are designed to either make your brain produce more of it or reduce how much of it gets absorbed by your brain so that more of it continues to float around in your body.

in your neurons. Um, One fun little fact though, is that sunlight actually triggers dopamine production in your brain. And so does exercise. So doing things like taking a walk, going on a hike, sitting outside and listening to the birds, just getting outside can help. Does it work? Not a hundred percent of the time.

Uh, but at a minimum, it can help you feel less fuzzy in the brain than if you just stayed inside staring at your computer screen. Um, so when I’m having one of those off days, I will literally. throw a leash on my dog, head out the front door, and just take a walk, listen to the birds, touch some grass. I mean, literally, like, I know it sounds ridiculous.

Um, and it often gets me good enough that I can start chipping away at some little tasks and then Hyper focus kicks in and I’m able to start like really digging into work. So anyways, that is it for today. If you feel like your ADHD is holding you back or you struggle with stuff like this, I send out a short email each weekday on how to help developers with ADHD thrive and unlock their neurodivergent superpowers.
